How AI assistants decide what to say

Large language models answer from two sources. One is what they learned in training, which reflects how often and how consistently a brand is described across the web. The other is live search: the assistant runs a query, reads the top pages and summarises them with citations. GEO works on both.

What we do in a GEO plan

• Entity foundation. One consistent description of who you are, what you sell, where and at what price, repeated on your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directories.
• Fact pages. Pricing, service lists, comparisons and policies written as plain statements a model can quote without guessing.
• Structured data. Organization, Service, Product, FAQ and Article schema with sameAs links to your official profiles.
• Citable content. Original numbers, clear definitions and step-by-step answers. Assistants cite sources that say something specific.
• Presence where models read. Reviews, industry lists, Wikipedia-style references where you qualify, Quora and Reddit answers, and press mentions.
• Crawler access. Checking that your robots file does not block GPTBot, Google-Extended, PerplexityBot or Bingbot unless you want it to, and adding an llms.txt summary file.
• Monitoring. A fixed set of prompts run every month across assistants to record whether you are mentioned, how you are described and who is cited instead.

What GEO cannot promise

Nobody controls what a language model outputs. Answers vary between users and change with model updates. llms.txt is a proposed convention, not a standard every assistant follows. We report what we observe and improve the inputs. Be wary of anyone selling guaranteed placement in ChatGPT.

Bing matters more than you think

ChatGPT search and Copilot draw on Bing's index. A site missing from Bing is missing from those answers. We verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap as part of setup.
